Just about everyone gets irked with the so called “pre-approved” credit card offers that arrive in the mail? Sadly our dear friend, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) of 1970 states the four credit bureaus have the right to sell your information to firms that aim to extend credit. In turn this information is collected and used to send many persons unsolicited offers for credit. However there is an easy out, for it is also current law that credit bureaus must provide a method for consumers to have their names not included in pre-approval lists used by the credit bureaus for these purposes. If you’re a United States resident and wish to not receive these “pre-screened” credit offers, Simply follow the instructions below:
Basically you have three choices. You can either:
A. Write a letter to all of the credit bureaus (Their Addresses at bottom of this article) instructing that your name be removed from these lists. Include phone number, full name, your ZIP code, postal and physical address (and previous if less than 6 months) with your Social Security Number to each bureau. build credit
C. Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT. The four main credit bureaus set this toll free gizmo up (B and C), so folks can opt out of all of them with a simple phone call or web visit. It is simply amazing how many people do not bother to do either of these.
If you have any doubts about the safety of 1-888-5-OPTOUT, it is listed as the official phone number to call at the FTC website at [http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/prescreen.shtm] as it is also states that the web address is valid.
